Treatment for PTSD and Trauma at Nsight

At Nsight Mental Health & Wellness, our team at our Newport Beach, CA clinic offers integrated mental health treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and trauma-related disorders.  Our compassionate treatment and a healing environment can make long-term recovery a reality.

What Is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)?

According to the DSM-5, also known as The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, trauma is defined as event that fits into one of the following:

  • The threat of or near-death experience (for example, being in or even witnessing a major accident may cause PTSD, even if you weren’t seriously injured)
  • Actual or threatened serious injury
  • Actual or threatened sexual violence

Additionally, you don’t need to have had experienced these events yourself to end up developing PTSD. Simply witnessing a major traumatic event can be as can trigger the disorder. However, and even more rarely, sometimes hearing about a significant traumatic experience of someone close to you can cause PTSD.

What are the Symptoms of PTSD?

According to the NIMH, to be diagnosed with PTSD, one must have symptoms from each of the four categories below. The duration of those symptoms must last for a minimum of 1 month and cause substantial distress or interference in your daily life. These categories include:

  • Re-experiencing symptoms: Intrusive thoughts, flashbacks, or nightmares about the trauma.
  • Symptoms of avoidance: Avoiding things that tend to trigger thoughts or memories about the trauma.
  • Mood and cognitive symptoms: These might include memory loss, anxiety, or depression. Some people may experience shame or guilt and possibly blame themselves for the traumatic experience.
  • Reactivity and arousal symptoms: One may experience tension, irritability, and insomnia. Another symptom might be hypervigilance. This is a condition where a person is constantly on the lookout for danger or overly alert.

The symptoms of PTSD prevent young adults and adults from experiencing and participating in the basic activities of daily life, including work, school, and social events – but The Joint Commission accredited treatment programs at our residential and outpatient treatment programs help clients manage these symptoms and reclaim their health and lives. We work with Veterans and all walks of life to aid in healing their traumatic experiences.  If you experience the severe and disruptive symptoms of PTSD or struggle with effects of traumatic events, we can help.

Our goal is to help patients with a history of trauma process the emotions associated with their trauma in a healthy, productive manner and create a real future. We develop treatment plans for PTSD around the symptoms of each client and ensure the treatment they receive matches their treatment history, their current needs, and provide them multiple solutions as part of the treatment plan which often includes psychiatric assessment, individual and group therapy, Spravato and Ketamine solutions to resolve and move through the trauma.  Our experienced clinical and medical staff will design a custom blend of medical, psychiatric, and integrative therapies that promote best outcomes for each client and family.

PTSD and Substance Use Disorder

Many people with substance use disorder also report symptoms of PTSD. When an individual has a substance use disorder and a mental health disorder at the same time, they receive a dual diagnosis and have what treatment professionals call co-occurring disorders. While evidence from research varies, studies show the following relationship between PTSD and alcohol/substance use disorder:

  • Close to 50% of people with PTSD also experience substance use disorder.
  • About 25% of men who need treatment for alcohol or drug abuse also have PTSD.
  • Close to 60% of women who need substance abuse treatment also have PTSD.
  • Individuals with PTSD are between three to four times more likely than those without PTSD to experience substance use disorder.

In many cases, the painful experience(s) of traumatic events/PTSD cause individuals to use drugs and alcohol to cover up and numb the understandable pain and trauma. These distressing feelings such as the guilt, shame, anger, or fear associated with trauma are overwhelming and this “self-medicating” may work temporarily, but the practice of self-medication causes more problems than it solves.

That’s why accredited, appropriate treatment for PTSD and co-occurring disorders is essential. The experience of trauma with an active substance use disorder rarely are solved on their own. In fact, without treatment, the most common outcome is that they get worse.

PTSD/Traumatic Events and other Mental Health Diagnoses

Approximately 80% of people with PTSD have at least one additional mental health issue. Exposure to trauma and/or abuse increases the risk of developing a wide range of mental health and/or alcohol/substance use disorders. The disorders and conditions most frequently reported by people with PTSD include:

  • Depression
  • Alcohol and substance use disorders
  • Psychotic disorders
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Personality disorders
