Choosing the Right Treatment Facility

How do I know if I need Rehab

Finding the Right Treatment Center

Whether you are seeking treatment for alcoholism, drug addiction, trauma, mood, or an eating disorder, choosing the right treatment facility to fit your needs can be difficult and confusing.  Doing research beforehand will help ensure a more positive outcome.  It is essential that careful consideration be given to the following:

  1. Start by visiting the treatment center’s website and take a look at the staff page.  If the program makes reference to treating dual diagnosis/co-occurring disorders, make sure that the staff is comprised of mostly doctorate and master’s level clinicians instead of interns, CAADC’s, or registered recovery workers.  It is imperative that treatment is provided by experienced and licensed mental health professionals.
  2. Next, confirm that the program is credentialed by either the Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO) or the Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).  These organizations are the two leading independent credentialing organizations in the United States and have established standards relating to administrative policies and procedures as well as client care and safety.  They also make site inspections to ensure adherence to these standards.  Many treatment facilities possess only a state license to operate and are not accredited by one of these organizations.  If a facility is not CARF or Joint Commission accredited, consider another facility.
  3. Lastly, you should ask yourself whether you are considering a particular program because of its geographical proximity?  A facility’s physical location is not as important as the quality of treatment that facility provides.  For example, if you were seeking treatment for cancer, would you want the doctor who is closest or the one that is the best?
